World We Imagine Part 1
I think one way I can contribute to making the world better would be to increase a business’ shared value since I am a business student who will likely work to increase a business’ profit margins.
Creating Shared Value (CSV) is a business strategy that aims to create economic value for a company while also addressing social and environmental issues. CSV goes beyond other approaches like Corporate Social Responsibility and focuses on creating sustainable business practices that address societal issues in a way that also generates economic value for the company. Because there are multiple benefits, CSV creates long-term solutions that address the root of societal problems. For example, a company could improve its supply chain to reduce waste and emissions while also improving efficiency and reducing costs. This would be by clustering a business’ supply chain in one location.
CSV is based on the belief that businesses have a moral obligation to its stakeholders and CSV can create strategy. By creating shared value, companies can build stronger relationships with customers, suppliers, and employees, and enhance their reputation and brand image.
Book Donations:
There is a lack of education in a lot of rural communities. As a result, people get trapped in a cycle of poverty. After discussing with some of my peers, I realized that one way I could help is by providing people with books. Often, there is no accessibility to books because they are too expensive, are unavailable due to geography, or other reasons. On the other hand, I have a lot of accessibility to books at a very affordable price. I would want to create an organization that creates a platform for people to donate books. For example, the books could go to schools so many people can benefit.
Clothing Recycling:
Due to fast fashion trends, there are a lot more clothes that are going to waste. These add to our landfills and the production of them expels a lot of pollution. One idea I have to resolve this issue is collecting the used clothing and repurposing them. I would create an organization whose sole purpose is to resell the textiles in a usable format to companies. This would encourage recycling materials and reduce pollution.
Wifi:
There is not accessible internet in a lot of areas of the world. As a result, people cannot access a lot of educational resources. This puts them at a disadvantage. I want to create a government-supported organization that partners with satellite companies to expand internet access. Not only will this improve people’s education, but it will also allow people to access other resources like telehealth.
Hi Allison,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your post about three ways you can make the world the better place. I recently learned about creating shared value and the importance of it. While I like all three of your ideas, I really like the clothing recycling idea the most. I think it is very practical and something that is very useful and important for society. I agree with you, a lot of clothes go to waste due to evolving fashion trends and those clothes that go to waste are hurting the environment through the waste of resources used to produce those clothes. It makes a lot of sense to resell textiles in a usable format to companies so that they can reduce waste and pollution. Setting up a company to do this is a great start!
Hi Allison, I think it's interesting that you want to focus on CSV through specific areas of work that vary from recycling to internet access. I think wifi is really important because having access to the internet gives people around the world access to resources that they might not otherwise have.
ReplyDeleteHi Allison! I think focusing on CSV is a great way to make our world a better place. Some of the businesses I admire the most are those that, like you mentioned, prioritize sustainability and equity. When we initially learned about CSV in BUAD 497, my initial opinion was that it was a somewhat manipulative tactic used by businesses for the sole purpose of generating more revenue. However, I wasn't truly viewing it through a "shared value" lens at first. Now, I definitely agree that businesses and consumers can coexist to provide value for one another. As more businesses focus on CSV, I can see society headed in a good direction.
