What is Lent?

This week, Lent started. Lent occurs about 2 months before Easter Sunday and is a period that is dedicated to repentance and reflection. During Lent, you fast and when it gets hard, you experience what Jesus felt during the time leading up to His crucifixion. For those who do not know, before Good Friday—the day of His crucifixion—Jesus fasted and was tempted by Satan. Fasting is supposed to make you thankful for His sacrifice and admire His strength towards avoiding temptation.

My Journey

Lent is always hard for me because I set hard goals. For example, one year, I gave up red meat and ice cream—which was the entirety of my diet. While it is hard, I appreciate Lent because it makes me excited for Easter and understand the holiday beyond bunnies and eggs.

During the first part of this past week, I was searching for something new to give up. I typically stick to food items because it is easy to remember like chocolate. However, I realized that I do not eat one item consistently. So, if I gave any food item up, I would not feel as if I were truly fasting.

What will I do for Lent?

Then, I found it. I was going to work out 5 days a week. Basically, I was sacrificing my free time. (Side note: I do not work out) I started one day early, and so far, it has been extremely difficult. I have even considered changing my goal 10 times and it has only been 4 days. I am very strict with Lent and do not falter, but this time, I will be surprised if I keep this up. So far, I have been sore and tired everyday which means I have been diligent. This might be one of the hardest goals I have ever set and encouraged the most reflection. Hopefully, I will be able to keep this up and Easter comes soon!

  1. Thanks for the post Allison! It was very interesting to hear about your personal journey with Lent. Although I don't practice anymore, when I was a kid I remember trying to give up things like candy and chocolate for lent (and I always failed miserably). Best of luck to you for the rest of this journey though, you got this!

  2. Hi Allison!! I really loved your post about Lent :) I appreciate your explanation for what it is because many people are unaware of the period. Funny enough I went to a Catholic school growing up from 1st - 12th grade but was never fully baptized so I have always had a weird experience with Lent. Although I was not obligated to participate, all my friends constantly gave something up and I always did it with them when I was younger because I didn't want to feel left out. Your post made me reminiscent of my childhood and my home.

  4. Hi Ava! I loved reading your post! I liked that you decided to tell us about a recent story as well as its back story. I also think that choosing something not food related to do for lent is way harder than giving up any food. Good luck with Lent im sure you can do it!

  6. Hi Allison, I have multiple friends that celebrate Lent but I have never spent too much time learning the traditions and how they work. Your post was helpful for me to understand Lent and the things that my friends do as a part of it.

  7. Hey! What I do with working out is try to get it in in the morning because overtime you're going to start getting addicted to the feeling of a nice shower after a good sweat to start your day. You have to make the process at large easier for yourself to do the least amount of thinking and processing until you're awake (set your clothes, pack your bags etc). Have a good breakfast you can make the night before - and enjoy a good refreshing start to your day :)
