Book 1
Post 1
I chose to read “American Like Me” by America Ferrera based off the reviews the book got online. Honestly, I did not put too much thought into it, but I am satisfied with my choice. I have read a little less than a quarter of the book already and I am already hooked. I like how there is a compilation of different perspectives lined up back-to-back because it keeps me engaged which is hard for a book to do.
Also, I think I keep turning the pages because I feel connected to the writers. I feel like I am having a one-on-one conversation with the authors. I would never say that I had a hard time growing up as an Asian woman in a predominately white area, but when I was reading, I found myself relating to their stories a lot. For example, when one author was sharing about a time when she was asked racially motivated questions, I realized that I experienced this too but did not think too much about it. Reading their stories made me realize that even though I was unaware, these types of comments affected me. Growing up, I also wished that I looked more like my white friends and would refrain from bringing Asian lunches to school.
