Who You Are Matters -- Allison Kim

Allison Kim

Describe where you come from:

I am from Bellevue, Washington and grew up in a suburban neighborhood. I have lived there for over 15 years with my parents and brother.

Tell me where you're going:

After college, I plan to become an accountant and work in advisory. I will work at one of the Big Four firms because I like the people I met during my recruitment period, their organizational culture, and job stability they provide. This is not my final career goal, but after working there for a period, I know that it will open many other career opportunities for me to choose from.

Tell me how you plan to get there:

I currently have a summer internship at KPMG, one of the Big Four firms, in Silicon Valley. I hope to make a great impression while I am there so that I can get a full time offer or use the experience to apply for other firms.

How are you LIKE your parents:

I am most like my dad. For example, we both love watching sports and are easy going. I am like my mom in the sense that we love talking.

How are you UNLIKE your parents:

My parents are both doctors but I have a fear of needles and so I have never even considered having a career as a doctor.

Have you developed your own expectations for yourself, or if you were honest, would you say you're operating under someone else's expectations?

I believe that I have set my own expectations for myself because I am very self-driven. Additionally, I have higher expectations for myself than, for example, my parents.

Who, other than a relative, serves as a model for you of someone who lives life with great passion and personal responsibility?

I have never identified one person as a model for myself. However, the people I admire are my friends. They are all very passionate about different things and I admire their work ethic and self-accountability.

Connecting with the ANIMAL WORLD: What wild animal do you feel a special connection with, and why?

I feel a special connection with deer because I have always seen them around my house, and I love their graceful mannerisms.

Connecting with the NATURE KINGDOMS: Describe a significant childhood encounter with a tree or plant.

I love dandelions because when I was a child, I would play with them. I would make dandelion bracelets or crowns and I loved to blow their seeds off with my friends.

  1. Hi Natalie! Congratulations on landing an internship with KPMG! I know recruiting is a very difficult and stressful process. Starting out in accounting is definitely a great foundation to aid you in your future career goals. Good luck this semester!

  2. Hi Allison! I also have a fear of needles! When I was little I wanted to be an FBI agent/spy–think of the kind of agent you see in movies and not a genuine FBI agent–but my parents said that I needed to have no fears that "the bad guys" could use against me. As you can imagine, I switched dream jobs pretty quickly after that. Also, I said deer as well! I grew up with them all around my house, too. However, I am not always the most graceful person, so maybe I'm less like a deer than I thought I was.

  3. Hi Allison,
That's so cool that you're from Bellevue! I grew up in Redmond so super close. Similar to you, I've had a bunch of deer in our yard. Congrats and good luck with the internship at KPMG.

  4. Hi Allison! I think it's hilarious how your fear of needles has dissuaded you from ever considering a career as a doctor. I'm exactly the same way and also get squeamish around blood, though ironically I remember having a dream of becoming a neurosurgeon back when I was a freshman in high school. It was a super short-lived dream, and I'll admit that it was mostly just because of the lucrative salary. Congrats on your internship with KPMG -- that's an extremely impressive accomplishment knowing just how competitive it is to recruit with the Big 4 accounting firms!

  5. Hey Allison ! I too am extremely petrified of needles, I still cannot look at them when I get shots, blood taken, etc. I will never do anything in the medical industry because I can not go near blood, shots, anything to do with medical needs. Dandelions are one of my favorite natural flowers, they are so peaceful and also remind me of playing with friends in the grass. Congratulations on KPMG that is amazing ! I know you will be successful in the future.
